Sedation

Do you experience high anxiety at the dental office due to fear or low tolerance to pain? Reducing anxiety for patients is our top priority. Sedation can be used in many dental procedures to make your experience more comfortable. Learn more about our sedation service.

When is dental sedation used?

Sedation may be used for patients with a fear of going to the dentist or who have general anxiety. Many people avoid seeing a dentist because of fear. Sedation helps to relax patients during dental treatments. Also, sedation can be helpful for patients with certain conditions, such as gag reflexes, sensitive teeth, a small mouth, or the inability to sit for long procedures.

Sedation can be administered during

  • Tooth extraction
  • Root canals
  • Dental implant
  • Periodontal surgery
  • Other oral surgeries

Types of sedation

IV sedation. This is a type of general anesthesia. Throughout the sedation, we closely monitor vital signs and maintain a consistent level of sedation. A caregiver must present during and after treatment to take the patient home and monitor for 24 hours.

Oral sedation. This is a type of conscious sedation that is used to relax the patient during dental treatments. The patient is awake but will feel relaxed and sleepy during oral sedation. The patient will be given pills to take at specific times before the treatments as directed by our doctor.

Nitrous oxide. Commonly known as “laughing gas”. The patient is awake but will feel relaxed and sleepy during Nitrous Oxide sedation. Because Nitrous Oxide enters and leaves the body quickly, it is generally safe for patients to drive home afterward.
